no regrets for student debt
Abby is 23 and a single mom living at home with supportive parents. She's also a recent graduate with a huge debt to pay back once she finds a decent job and starts earning real money, and doesn't regret incurring that debt studying something she loves.
"If you are going to be paying off an education debt for the rest of your life," warns Abby, "then make sure that you are studying something that you can benefit from in your personal life."
"Don't be browbeaten into doing a course in computer studies or nursing or teaching because of job opportunities in that area."
"If you really hate computers, bedpans or children, you shouldn’t be studying computers or nursing!"
"Also, forget about the employment prospects of the course you are studying," adds Abby. "If you do gain a job after completing the course then that would be wonderful, but don't expect it as a God-given right. Do the course because you love the subject."
"Just like everybody else your chances of success on any course are dependent upon your studying something you enjoy and are naturally good at doing."
"I studied archeology knowing full well that my chances of getting a paying job in that field are zilch," laughs Abby, "but it was what I wanted to do and my parents supported my decision.”
“As for the debt? Well, as far as I'm concerned it will sit there until I die!"
